Celebrate the leading ladies in interior design this International Women’s Day

Here at Aspire, our company ethos is to create a fair and equal working environment for all of our employees every day - but when it comes to International Women’s Day we recognise the importance of celebrating all of the wonderful women that work to make Aspire the company it is today, our amazing female customers, as well as leading ladies within the interior design industry that inspire us every day!

International Women’s Day History

IWD is said to have been historically recognised as a day of awareness since 1909 in the United States after 15,000 women marched through New York City in protest of equal rights for female workers and the right to vote. This ideology became an international awareness day in 1910 by a woman named Clara Zetkin, a leader of the women’s office for the social democratic party of Germany and since 1914 the importance of women's day became a recognised global calendar date every 8th day of March.

International Women’s Day 2022 Theme

The theme and awareness hashtag for IWD2022 is #BreakTheBias, which focuses on breaking down the barriers of stereotypes and discrimination to create a world that is gender-equal and diverse.

Inspirational Women in the Interior Design Industry

Our team of designers and trend forecasters take inspiration from many of the leading ladies in interior design. Here are some of our favourite female designers to celebrate this International Women’s Day:

Gae Aulenti

Gae Aulenti, widely known as a design hero, revitalised individuality and creativity within architecture, stage design, furniture design and interiors since graduating as one of the only two women in her architecture course at the Milan Polytechnic University.

Her most famous work includes the transformation of an old Parisian train station into the world-renowned Musée d’Orsay, with her use of old and new textures to create a striking vision of beauty. As one of the few women who worked within the design industry during the post-war era, we are inspired by Gae for her encouragement of freedom of expression and limitless design.

Kelly Hoppen

If you are asking what creates a timeless design, look towards a Kelly Hoppen design, known for her simplistic yet sophisticated interior design style. However, we are completely inspired by her dedication to mentoring young talent to find opportunities within the interior design industry and finding confidence within themselves as part of the Prince’s Trust Tomorrow campaign.

Zaha Hadid

As the first woman to receive The Pritzker Prize and RIBA Royal Gold Medal for her contribution to architecture and design, we admire Zaha wholeheartedly for her creation of beautiful and spatial designs, in addition to her leading work for the industry.
