Sofa GuideAdjustable beds sound like a dream, the ability to tailor its sleeping position to your exact needs, a myriad of potential health benefits and in some cases they even give you a massage! What’s not to like?
Well, as you might expect, their price point is on the higher side, they can be loud when being operated and you may have to buy new bedding sets too. We’ve put together a list of pros and cons when it comes to adjustable beds to help you make an informed decision for your next bed.
Buying an adjustable bed would certainly be an investment, so you want to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth. Here’s what an adjustable bed could bring to you and your sleep quality.
The main benefit of an adjustable bed is the ability to adjust the sleeping position of the bed to your exact needs. By doing so, this enables many other benefits to be a possibility (we’ll cover these soon).
Not everyone sleeps the same, you’ve got side sleepers, back sleepers, front sleepers, people who like to sleep slightly sat up or with their legs higher than their head. Well an adjustable bed allows you to sleep in so many different positions without the need to prop up your head or feet with a number of pillows. Plus the function of getting into that position is effortless too, due to the included remote control.
Some adjustable beds (like the ones we sell here at Aspire), also give you the option to save your favourite sleeping positions, ensuring you can find them again at the push of a button. With our beds you can save two positions, maybe one for sleeping and one for relaxing watching the TV or reading a book before bed.
There are also adjustable beds available that have independent controls for each side of the bed too, giving you even greater control over your sleeping position and these are ideal for couples that have two different sleeping styles. This is a feature that’s available in our King and Super Size adjustable bed models.

The ability to change your sleeping position in an adjustable bed also brings with it a wide range of potential health benefits for you to benefit from. For example, by raising the height of your legs whilst you sleep, you can increase blood circulation to and from the heart and in turn this can help to reduce any swelling in your legs too.
Then there’s something that’s known as the ‘zero gravity position’, which relieves pressure on your body whilst you sleep. This can be achieved by raising both your head and legs just above the heart level, which in turn also neutrally aligns your spine. An adjustable bed makes that a reality.
The ability to adjust your sleeping position to your specific requirements can also help to eliminate the general aches and pains that many of us wake up with from sleeping in a traditional ‘flat’ bed. Because you can target those pesky pressure points that are often the cause of those pains you experience.
They can also help with respiratory issues through the night by allowing you to elevate your head and upper body whilst you sleep, which helps to open up the airways, reduces pressure on the lungs and can ease symptoms of sleep apnea, COPD and asthma.
Another common complaint whilst sleeping is acid reflux, which can often wake up people who suffer from it two or three times a night. By elevating your head and chest, you can help prevent stomach acid from travelling up into your esophagus and causing those sleep disturbing symptoms.
Adjustable beds can also make the process of getting in and out of bed much easier too. Because you can raise yourself up into a sitting position, you only simply have to swing your legs over to the side of the bed and stand up. Especially because the height of adjustable beds often take this into account and make that process even easier.
This also goes for getting into bed too. You can put the bed into a position that allows you to sit on the bed and then lower yourself into your desired sleeping position by using the remote control. It’s a much gentler experience for your body.
Adjustable beds also make life’s little pleasures that much more enjoyable. For example, it’s much easier to find a comfortable position to watch TV, read a book or even eat breakfast in bed. Plus, with the ability to save positions, you can quickly find that perfect position again in the future.
That feeling of getting off your feet after a long hard day working on them is absolute bliss isn’t it? Well, with an adjustable bed, it’s even better, because you can easily elevate your feet even further to reduce any swelling and in turn minimise the possibility of developing any related conditions such as varicose veins too.
Yep, you’re hearing us correctly, some adjustable beds even have a massage option to choose from. Imagine that after a long day at work or first thing in the morning to get you ready for the day.
The gentle vibrations on offer from adjustable beds with this feature can certainly be a game changer, even with the higher costs involved.

The ability to independently control each side of the bed on an adjustable bed is another game changer for couples, especially if you both have different sleeping styles. This feature is facilitated through the use of two separate mattresses on two separately remote controlled platforms.
This feature gives you ultimate control of your sleep position, tailored uniquely to your independent needs. It often comes with a higher price due to the additional mechanisms included and the craftsmanship involved, but we feel it’s the best way to experience an adjustable bed and everything one has to offer. This feature is available in our King and Super King size adjustable bed range.
As you can see, there’s lots of positives when it comes to adjustable beds, but as with most things, there are some potential drawbacks.
As you can imagine, with all the added technology included with an adjustable bed, they are more expensive than any other bed type. When you factor in the electrical mechanism, the remote control, the stronger materials needed to support such functionality and the specific mattresses required, the costs increase.
So this can potentially position adjustable beds outside of your budget for your new bed. But remember, many retailers will likely offer different repayment terms, which could help the situation.
When operating, the mechanism can be loud, which could be an issue in cases where you have a dual control adjustable bed and you may wake your sleeping partner when changing your position. However not as much of an issue if you’re both awake.
This issue is also certainly something that’s more relevant for the older or lower-end models. Most modern adjustable beds are designed to be much quieter. In fact, our adjustable beds are whisper quiet, so no need to worry about disturbing your sleeping partner.
Due to the technology involved with adjustable beds, you must consider the potential of higher maintenance costs in the long run. They have motors, frames with joints and other parts that may break over time with normal wear and tear. So it’s important to budget for and consider further costs down the line. Of course the product will likely come with a fixed warranty, but it’s when that runs out you need to be prepared in case anything fails.
As you can imagine, with all the mechanisms involved and the heavy materials required to support the mattress and anyone using the bed, adjustable beds are very heavy, more so than any other bed on the market.
This makes them much more difficult to move around the room when reconfiguring it or when cleaning underneath the bed. Its weight is something to consider when moving house too, as is the disassembly and reassembly of the bed in your new home.
Unfortunately, not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds. This is because they need to be able to bend with the adjusting bed platform without breaking and without you feeling uncomfortable. Generally memory foam, latex and pocket spring mattresses work well with adjustable beds, but more traditional bonnell spring mattresses, not so much. So this of course could increase the costs further for you if you need to also purchase a new mattress (or two for dual control beds) on top too.
The mattresses that are often used on adjustable beds are unique sizes too, for example on many of our adjustable bed sizes, the mattresses are actually longer than their traditional size compatriots. So you can’t just use any mattress on an adjustable bed. This brings with it another potential issue, the need for special bedding. Due to their specific size, you may need specific bedding for the mattress size and as such may need to purchase this from specific retailers.
So as you can see, there’s plenty of pros and cons when it comes to adjustable beds, not all of which will apply to your specific situation, but hopefully we’ve given you lots of information to consider and have helped you to make your mind up when it comes to purchasing an adjustable bed.
