Chinese New Year is a time for ushering out the old year and bringing forth the luck and prosperity of the new one. That’s why it’s important to make sure that you are well-rested and your home is free of negative energy so you can celebrate properly. To keep positive energy flowing in and keep negative energy out, here is some crucial advice from us at Aspire to help you bring in the new year with good fortune and a good night’s sleep.
What is Feng shui?
The Chinese words "Feng" and "Shui" translate to “wind” and “water," respectively. The initial concept comes from an ancient poem that discusses how human life is connected and flows with the environment around it.
The philosophy of feng shui is the practice of arranging pieces in living spaces to create balance with the natural world. The main goal of feng shui is to harness energy forces and establish harmony between an individual and their environment.
The essential principles of feng shui:
-
The commanding position - the spot in a room that is the furthest from the door and not in direct line with it.
-
The Bagua, - A Bagua is the feng shui energy map overlapping on the floor plan of your home. The Chinese word "Bagua" translates to mean “eight areas.”
-
The five elements. (earth, metal, water, wood, and fire) - these are important as they can help you decide the energy focus of your room. Each element signifies different
In order to get your ideal feng shui bedroom, it is important to:
-
Pick the right bed
-
Find your ideal furniture placement
-
Pick colours and elements according to your element
-
Clear the clutter
-
Let the air flow
-
Keep electronics out of the room
-
Add nature to your room
Pick the Right Bed
It goes without saying, the mattress is very important to get a good night’s sleep. Memory foam mattresses are always a good option as it moulds to your body shape and supports you where you need it. Although, it is important to note that having a bed frame with solid wood or upholstered headboards is much better than metal ones, to attract the type of comfort you want when sleeping.
Find Your Ideal Furniture Placement
Having your room in the correct layout is essential to achieving feng shui, as it can affect the flow of chi in the room and possibly prevent positive energy from flowing around the room.
Firstly, make sure your bed is in the commanding position, which refers to the point in the room that is the furthest from the door but not in direct line with it. Ideally, have your bed placed against a wall with bedside tables on either side. Having bedside tables on each side of your bed is considered to be grounding and can assist you in acquiring positive chi when you are sleeping.
It is also important to note that you should under no circumstances have your bed directly facing the door when trying to achieve feng shui, as it represents a coffin being dragged out feet first (not exactly the type of energy you want in your bedroom is it?)
In addition to this, make sure there are no mirrors facing your bed, as it interrupts the energy you are trying to gain whilst asleep. Mirrors reflect energy, so the energy you are replenishing will reflect onto the mirror rather than be absorbed by you.
Pick Colours and Elements According To Your Element
Knowing your element is important as everyone is different and the energy of the room can affect elements differently. You can find a good source here to find your element.
Your colours can reflect what you want to focus on in life, such as a partnership or your career, and help you in your journey. Having the correct elements and colours is essential to focusing energies on what you are wanting to achieve in life and allows for a sense of direction.
Clear the Clutter
Although it’s tempting to just stuff your cupboards with your excess items, it would significantly disrupt the flow of chi within the room. Think of it as a block, would you be able to walk through a wall? This is why it’s important to make sure every type of clutter, no matter where, is dealt with accordingly. It could be thrown, donated or recycled but no matter what, it’s gotta go!
Let the Air Flow
Letting energy pass in and out of the room is fundamental in feng shui as negative energy is not able to be released from the room and positive energy cannot come in. Would you be able to walk through a closed door?
In order to achieve this, make sure your doors are left open as much as possible. Although, make sure that only one door is open if you have two doors in the room. If you have to have both open, make sure there is a block of some kind between the two doors, such as furniture. This will prevent “runaway chi”, which is where positive energy will just go out of the room as soon as it comes in.
Keep Electronics Out Of The Room
Especially during the pandemic, most people will have a desk and computer in their bedroom. Whether it’s for working from home, or for your intense gaming sessions, having electronics in your bedroom can interrupt your sleep significantly According to bedroom feng shui, they add fire energy to your room, which, not surprisingly, can make it hard for you to sleep.
If you can, try to do any activities involving an electronic device in another room. This could be setting up a little office space in your spare room or taking calls elsewhere. Try to take 30 minutes to be electronic-free before bed so you can rest your eyes from the screen as well as get ready.
Add Nature to Your Room
Feng shui focuses mostly on nature and how human beings have a connection to our environments. Nature equates to tranquillity, which is exactly the sort of feeling you want when you’re trying to drift off to dreamland. So what better way to connect to nature than putting a few plants in the room?
They don’t have to be huge, hard to take care of plants, just a small batch of flowers in a vase or a little cactus will go a long way.
