Are you experiencing problems with getting to sleep?
Few things are as frustrating as tossing and turning in bed, trying to count woolly sheep to doze off.
We all know the importance of sleep and the desire for a good night’s rest, yet sometimes sleep eludes us no matter how desperately we want to sleep.
If you are having a problem sleeping and have tried the usual tips and tricks to get some shut-eye, perhaps it’s time to think outside the box.
Spiritual and crystal healing for improved sleep
Just as there are several reasons why some people have a problem sleeping (like insomnia, anxiety, depression or chronic pain), there are several ways to try to improve sleep quality.
Spiritual healing and the use of crystals are one of them. Although there isn’t a scientific link between crystal or energy healing and sleep quality, cultures around the world have sworn by these methods for centuries.
History of crystal and spiritual healing
The use of crystals can be dated back to ancient Sumerians. Furthermore, ancient Egyptians, Greeks and early Chinese medicine have all used stones and crystals for various purposes including healing, protection, cosmetics, good fortune and wellbeing. In the Age of Enlightenment, crystal healing waned from popularity only to re-emerge as a healing method in the 1980s together with the New Age culture.
Spiritual healing shares the same roots. As long as civilization has existed, there has been the desire and attempt to heal illnesses. The oldest known healing practises date back to Shamanism where the shaman would enter an altered state of consciousness in a quest to find help for the ill person. Different cultures throughout history have had various traditions of spiritual and energy healing.
In today’s world, spiritual healing is not linked to a specific religion.
Spiritual healing, crystals… What does it all mean?
Spiritual healing is often seen as a self-help tool. It is about the transfer of energy from the healer to the recipient for the purpose of bringing improvement from illness or ailment. It is considered non-invasive, natural and intended to bring “the recipient into a state of balance and wellbeing on all levels” (NFSH Healing Trust).
The use of crystals is based on the belief that the thousands of minerals that the Earth is composed of have the ability to heal, transmit energy and bring balance.
The benefits of spiritual healing and crystals for better sleep quality
As mentioned, there is no scientific evidence that supports the use of crystals for improved sleep. However, many believe that wearing crystals before bedtime or placing them in your bedroom or under the mattress contributes to a better night’s sleep. Many also believe that crystals have the potential to improve overall wellbeing – sleep patterns included.
Crystals recommended for peaceful, anxiety-free sleep are: green calcite, rose quartz, amethyst, howlite and sapphire. Lapis lazuli, jasper, ruby and opal are recommended for sleep apnea and insomnia. To fend off nightmares, place black tourmaline or citrine under your pillow.
Spiritual healing such as reiki uses methods of relaxation, essential oils, energy transfer and gentle touch. The purpose is to release tension, promote harmony, and balance the mind, body and spirit. The benefits for sleep quality come in the form of total body relaxation that prepares your body for sleep; when your body and mind are in harmony, sleep quality benefits.
