The Best Mattress Types For Hot Sleepers

With the nights getting lighter and the weather getting warmer, we thought we’d take a look at the best mattress types for people who get too hot and uncomfortable whilst sleeping.

Getting too hot whilst sleeping is a very common issue for many of us, but it can be disruptive to both our sleep quality and concentration levels the next day. Whilst in most cases this can be put down to the clothes you're wearing, your bedding being too hot or your hormones, it can also be caused by certain medications and medical conditions.

Whilst some reasons aren’t as easily fixed, there are certain choices you can make to reduce your temperature at night and get a cooler and more restful night’s sleep. We’ll take a look at some of the possible reasons for you being too hot at night, how your mattress type can help and our other top tips for keeping you cool at night.

So first of all, let’s take a look at some of those reasons why you might be feeling a bit hot and uncomfortable at night.

Why Do I Get Hot When Sleeping?

There are plenty of reasons why some of us feel too hot at night, from thick bedding and the changes in weather to hot flashes, nerve damage and even something you ate before bed. Here’s many of the common and not so common reasons for feeling hotter at night.

Your Sleep Environment

Your sleeping environment from the clothes you wear and the thickness of your bedding to your sleeping partner and the temperature of the weather are the most common reasons for feeling too hot at night. Some of which can be fixed by making a few changes.

Mattress Type & Pillow Material Choice

We’ll delve deeper into this later on, but the type of mattress you sleep on will also have an effect on your temperature at night. As will your choice of pillow type as some materials like memory foam can lock in heat and make things a little more uncomfortable.

Open Your Windows & Use A Fan

Then there’s of course the time of year, which you often can’t do much about. This is especially true here in the UK, with our houses designed to retain heat and the fact, air conditioning isn’t exactly prevalent in homes across the country. However there are a few tips you can follow to make things a little bit cooler.

First of all, open your windows either early in the morning or in the late evening when the air outside is cooler than the air inside. Making sure to keep them closed during the day when it’s hotter outside. Secondly, purchase a fan to keep that cooler air moving in your bedroom during the night and keep your bedroom door open to promote further air circulation, especially if you’ve followed the first tip with the windows.

Sharing Body Heat

Lastly, your sleeping partner and any pets you may sleep with could also be warming you up, after all, the average adult produces between 75 and 90 watts of heat overnight! However, short of kicking them out of the bed, there’s not too much you can do with this one.

Food & Drinks You Ate

Rather surprisingly, the food and drink you consume before bed can also have an effect on your body temperature overnight.

Although research is a little limited, some studies suggest that consuming alcoholic drinks, anything with caffeine in it, spicy foods  and carbohydrate or protein rich meals before bed can raise your body temperature. So maybe lay off the Indian and a pint of lager before bed.

Pre-Sleep Activities

There are some activities that it may be best to avoid so close to bedtime if you’re prone to being hot through the night too, such as:

Exercising

Whilst exercise in the evening is more likely to make you tired, improving your sleep quality in that regard. Exercising vigorously so close to bedtime can impair sleep onset and raise your core body temperature

Drinking Caffeine

It goes without saying that caffeine increases alertness and as such isn’t the best idea to consume it before bedtime, but did you know it can also increase your body’s core temperature?

Stressful Activities

Avoiding stress is another pretty obvious no go, but sometimes this can’t be avoided. When you feel stressed, your blood vessels constrict, which drops the temperature of your skin but subsequently increases your core temperature.

Having Sex

Whilst sex can help improve sleep quality due to the workout it often provides and the relaxing hormones it produces, having vigorous sex close to trying to go to sleep, can also have a similar effect to vigorous exercise before bed, increasing your body’s core temperature.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are a sudden and overwhelming feeling of heat that starts off in your chest and starts to spread to the rest of your body. Thankfully, they often only last a few minutes, but they can be really uncomfortable and cause you to sweat.

They’re often caused by hormone changes, particularly those experienced during pregnancy, the postpartum period and the menopause and can occur during the night whilst you’re asleep too, disrupting your sleep. If these nighttime hot flashes are accompanied by excessive sweating, then they’re often referred to as night sweats instead.

Medications & Conditions

Unfortunately there are also a wide range of medications and health conditions that can also cause you to either feel really hot at night or cause excessive sweating. Whilst we can’t go into all of them, one of the most common health conditions that can cause you to feel hot at night is Hyperthyroidism. Which is essentially an overactive thyroid gland that can cause many of the symptoms associated with being hot at night.

When it comes to medications and treatments that can also make you feel like this, antidepressant medications are the most common culprit that leads to excessive sweating, whilst medicines designed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or the aforementioned Hyperthyroidism can also cause similar symptoms.

What Mattress Types Are Best For Hot Sleepers?

So as you can see, there’s a lot of reasons as to why you may be feeling hot at night, some of which are more easily tackled than others, but there’s one thing you can definitely look to do to help cool you down on an evening, take a look into buying the right mattress

There are mattresses available that utilise cooling technology to help keep you cooler through the night. They often feature breathable materials that help to promote airflow through the mattress as you sleep. Now each and every mattress has their pros and cons and features that make them more suitable for one person over the other (and we delve a little deeper into that with our breakdown of our exclusive mattresses with cooling technology further below), but first of all, we’re breaking down the best mattress types to consider looking into for a cooler night’s sleep.

Hybrid Mattresses

Due to the way hybrid mattresses are constructed, they’re often a great choice if you’re looking to stay cooler during the night. They’re often made up of a base of pocket sprung coils, topped with either memory foam, gel or latex.

The coils featured within, help to increase airflow through the mattress and keep you cooler at night. Not only that, but there are hybrid mattresses on the market that are finished with a cooling layer of fabric or gel that helps to keep you cool too.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Similar to hybrid mattresses, but without a second material featured within such as memory foam, pocket sprung mattresses feature plenty of individually pocketed spring coils that help to support you and your sleeping partner throughout the night. Once again, these coils offer increased airflow throughout the mattress helping to keep you cool.

Once again, there are options on the market that have added technology to improve their cooling properties even further too, such as fabric that’s infused with carbon fibre strands to provide it with an active cooling effect. Sounds cool right?

Pillowtop Mattresses

Whilst many pillowtop mattresses can actually keep you warmer and maybe too warm for people who often feel too hot whilst sleeping, there are pillowtop mattresses out there that feature high tech cooling technology and are crafted using natural materials such as wool that are known for their natural temperature regulating properties.
