Everything you need to know about choosing the right sofa for your living space.
Sofa GuideChoosing the right mattress as a couple is a really important decision, after all, we spend around a third of our lives in bed. Plus, getting a good night’s sleep is so important when it comes to operating at your very best throughout the day, whether that’s at work or enjoying time with the family.
So selecting the right type of mattress is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a couple. But what do you need to consider to ensure you make the right choice?
As with everything we cover in this guide, it’s more than likely that they’ll have to be some element of compromise from each of you when it comes to the different elements to consider when choosing the right mattress for you both as a couple.
Chances are, your sleeping position, how firm you like your mattress and how hot or cold you get in bed aren’t all going to align with one another. So it’s important to know, going into this process that you’re going to have to give and take, with the aim of getting the best mattress solution you can.
So with that in mind, let’s take a look at how your sleeping style comes into play. Different types of mattresses are more suitable for some of the sleeping positions most of us find ourselves in, than others. For example, when it comes to back sleepers, you’ll want to consider pocket sprung and orthopaedic mattresses first as they’ll certainly look to help promote healthy alignment of your spine as you sleep. Pocket sprung mattresses generally adapt to your body to provide tailored support where you need it most, whilst orthopaedic mattresses are on the firmer side, which can help to alleviate or prevent back pain by reducing any strain on your spine.

Now of course, that isn’t to say other mattress types aren’t suitable for back sleepers such as cloud like memory foam or comfortable pillowtop mattresses. It’s just that the likes of orthopaedic and pocket sprung mattresses are generally more suitable for back sleepers in the main. It’s important to keep this in mind as we continue through our guide, we don’t want you to dismiss any mattress types entirely, we’re just here to offer our best advice for each element to consider.
As for side sleepers, you’ll want to look for a mattress that’s on the softer side but still provides your hips and shoulders with the support they need. Relieving the strain on your pressure points is conducive to a good night’s sleep so a memory foam or hybrid mattress are great choices for side sleepers with their contouring support, yet softer feel.
When it comes to those of you who sleep on your front, you need to consider a mattress that looks to keep your spine aligned whilst reducing the possibility of any pressure build up in your neck and shoulders. With that in mind, a pocket sprung mattress would be a great choice as they provide the perfect balance between comfort and support, helping to keep your spine aligned and distribute your weight evenly so that each of your pressure points are relieved.
Of course other aspects of how you sleep must also be taken into account and could make one of our above recommendations more or less suitable, so it’s important to weigh everything up before making your final decision.
The next aspect to consider when choosing the right mattress is how hot the both of you get when sleeping. Whether you tend to be a hot sleeper who needs it cooler or someone who loves to snuggle up and get warm, there’s mattress technology available that’s suitable for both styles.
If you tend to get rather hot whilst sleeping, you’ll want to look into a mattress that features cooling technology, such as our Pocket+ Memory Cooler range that features carbon fibre strands within the fabric which helps to prevent heat buildup and provides an active cooling effect.
There’s also our Climate Cool Wool Pillowtop mattresses range that combines the natural temperature regulation properties of wool with our high tech fabric that helps to keep you cool at night.
Wool in general is a fantastic choice when it comes to temperature regulation, because it naturally keeps you warmer when it’s cold and cooler when it’s hot, so mattresses featuring wool are a great choice for both sleepers who like to snuggle up and get warm or those of you who tend to get hotter and cooler along with the changing seasons.
Another great option so you can take advantage of both worlds is to invest in a dual sided mattress that provides both a cooler and warmer side. This is perfect if you’re both closely aligned in regards to the temperature you like to sleep at, allowing you to flip the mattress to the cooler side once Summer comes around and then back to the warmer side as the cold nights draw in.
If you or your partner tends to toss and turn throughout the night, it could be a good idea to consider looking at a mattress that’s designed to reduce the impact movement has on your sleeping partner. Hybrid or pocket spring mattresses are generally a good choice in this regard with many of them offering edge to edge support and motion isolation properties too
Edge to edge support ensures that the supporting technology within your mattress extends to the edge of the mattress. Alongside this you’ll want to invest in a mattress that’s crafted to have strong edges too, that won’t start to sink over time. This perimeter is usually created through the implementation of cleverly designed pocket springs attached to a sturdy wire frame positioned around the internal edge of the mattress.
There are also memory foam or hybrid mattresses available that feature high density memory foam that provides edge to edge support too. It’s important to note that edge to edge support is usually only found in higher end mattresses that often cost more money, but we certainly feel like it’s a brilliant feature and a great investment in your sleep if you opt for a mattress with edge to edge support.
Motion isolation technology is designed to reduce motion transfer to the other side of the bed when you move to a new sleeping position throughout the night. Pocket Spring mattresses are ideal in this regard as the individually pocketed springs react to your body’s movement to provide you both with the tailored support you need as you or your partner lays still and the other is changing positions.
When it comes to allergies it’s actually impossible to suggest a particular type of mattress to those with allergies, because it all depends on what you’re allergic to. However, whilst there are hypoallergenic mattresses to be found in a variety of mattress types, memory foam, pocket spring or mattresses featuring latex of wool are generally a good choice across the board.
Dust mites, which are often the cause of many allergies when it comes to mattresses and beds, find it harder to penetrate the tight structure of the memory foam and latex, making them both a great choice in this regard. Whilst wool itself has natural antimicrobial properties, offering protection against the likes of bacteria, mould and mildew, so any mattresses featuring wool could be a great hypoallergenic option.
Mattresses that provide breathability and airflow are a good choice as that will help to prevent mould and mildew build up and makes them less hospitable to dust mites too. This is where pocket spring mattresses come in. The construction of these types of mattresses and the placement of the individual pocket springs promotes airflow throughout the mattress.
Another aspect to consider is that dust mites love the humidity given off by our bodies as we sleep, so investing in a mattress that keeps you cool, could help to keep dust mites at bay too.
Lastly, you must consider how firm you like your mattress to be and if you’re at the opposite ends of the spectrum, aim to meet in the middle with a medium-firm or medium-soft mattress. It’s important to remember that you’ll find varying degrees of firmness within each mattress type, so we can only talk in general terms when it comes to mattress firmness.
If you both like to sleep on a firmer mattress, then generally an orthopaedic mattress is a great choice. These mattresses are designed to be firm to aid those with back or joint pain issues and people with mobility issues. Orthopaedic mattresses can be made out of a number of materials and can be found within a variety of mattress types such as hybrid and memory foam too.
Hybrid mattresses are another great choice, especially if they include memory foam or latex within their construction. These are both denser, yet cushioned materials that provide a firm yet comfortable sleeping experience.
When it comes to medium-firm and medium-soft mattresses, you’ll find a mattress with this desired firmness in almost each and every mattress type, such as memory foam, hybrid, pocket sprung and latex. You’ll need to conduct deeper research into each of the mattress options available and consider everything we’ve discussed in this article so you can make a more informed and reasoned choice. But the great news is you’re probably spoilt for choice in this regard.
However if you’re opting for a soft firmness mattress, a pillowtop or certain types of memory foam mattresses are a good option. Pillowtop mattresses offer exactly that, a soft, cushioned pillow often stitched to the mattress itself to provide a comfortable and supportive surface to sleep on. Whilst there are memory foam mattresses available across the market that are more ‘softer’ than others, providing even more of a ‘sinking’ feeling.
As you can see, it’s not an easy choice picking the right mattress for you as a couple. There’s lots to consider and plenty of variables at play. It’s important to consider all the aspects we’ve covered, weighing up the pros and cons each mattress type can provide and then deciding on a mattress that gives you both as many benefits as possible.
