When it comes to shopping around for a new bed, you may be stumped when choosing the one that’s right for you - there are so many options out there right now. Both Divan and Ottoman beds make great choices to enhance your decor, comfort and storage, giving you many nights of wonderful sleep!

It’s psychologically proven that having an organised and tidy bedroom improves your sleep quality, as it becomes a stress-free environment where you can relax and unwind.

Divan Beds and Ottoman beds make perfect options for this, so why don’t we find which one is a perfect match for you? But first, let’s take a look at the differences between them both and what makes each one so effective in the living space.

What Is The Difference Between A Divan Bed & An Ottoman Bed?

An Ottoman Bed is a bed frame that is designed to lift open using a gas-lift system, revealing plenty of storage space underneath. This means they have mechanisms that use gas and hinges to make the lifting process feel seamless and easy, allowing you to lift it effortlessly.

Side opening ottoman beds and end opening ones are available at our store, making them versatile in accordance with your room layout and surrounding furniture. Underneath, you can store anything from clothes, books, magazines, gifts, shoes and other items that you don’t want on show. Designed to last many years to come, our ottoman beds can house many of your belongings, making your room tidy and giving you many nights of improved sleep.

Similarly, a Divan bed is a bed frame that is designed with storage space underneath. However, instead of a gas-lift system, they are designed with built in drawers. You can also store a wide variety of your belongings underneath with easy access to the pull out drawers. Simple, durable and practical - the divan bed is a great option to last you many years to come.

Pros & Cons Of Ottoman Beds

Pros

Ottoman beds offer plenty of different advantages for comfort and storage. Their main advantage is their ample storage space underneath, where you can store a wide variety of items that you don’t want on show. As opposed to the Divan Bed, you can store large items such as suitcases, bedding, backpacks and seasonal clothes - all things you don’t need access to on a daily basis. This frees up more of your wardrobe and attic space, making your home feel generally decluttered and more organised - it’s definitely what makes a relaxing and peaceful environment in your home!

You can customise the way you’d like your storage to be laid out in the Ottoman bed, whether it’s side opening or end opening. We’ll delve into why exactly this might benefit people later, but it’s a fantastic advantage to choose a side opening bed if your bed is against a wall.

Another advantage of the ottoman bed is its gaslift system - it’s smooth and easy to operate, you don’t need to move the mattress or strain yourself to access the underneath storage.

Cons

There are a few things to consider when it comes to purchasing an Ottoman Bed, but there’s no need to worry - they are all easy fixes.

The first drawback that you might find with an Ottoman Bed is how they often come at a higher cost in contrast to the Divan Bed. A lot of expert craftsmanship, materials and technology goes into making the Ottoman Bed, so they tend to be on the pricier side. If you’re someone who is in need of a lot more storage space, however, they could be a great investment for you.

Due to the various parts, gas-lift system, slats and headboard, Ottoman Beds can take a little bit more time to assemble with extra steps to set them up. Once you’ve planned everything and followed  our assembly instructions, they’re worth the extra time spent building.

Another con to think about before purchasing an Ottoman Bed is you can’t vacuum or clean underneath the bed where the storage items are kept, since the bed is very low and plush to the floor. You can easily resolve this by using a bed base protector or mat, which prevents anything from damaging your carpets and floors, as well as making sure your stored items are kept nicely protected. At a later stage, simply remove this and wash it to get rid of any build up of debris and dust.

Pros & Cons Of Divan Beds

Pros

Divan beds are also an excellent option to choose in order to create a relaxing bedroom and improve your sleep quality. Let’s dive into what makes them so great in their own ways.

Divan beds are designed with built-in drawers, making them perfect to store a wide variety of everyday items, such as shoes, clothes, spare bedding, books, hair-dryers and magazines. Items that you would normally use in your everyday routine can be stored in these drawers, ready for you to easily access.

Another advantage for the Divan Bed is how they are easily accessible for many different types of people. Despite the Ottoman Bed being an excellent 2-in-1 furniture and storage accessory, it can be sometimes heavy to lift for certain individuals who have limited mobility. The divan bed features a simple design with its convenient and accessible drawers built into its bed base.

More often than not, Divan beds are constructed with a solid bed base, with no slats. If you’re someone who likes a lot of firmness and support when sleeping, the divan bed base offers plenty of this, thanks to its solid and sturdy base. There’s no risk of your mattress sinking in between the slats, which is a common issue that causes mattresses to have uneven surfaces and weaken over time.

Just like the Ottoman bed, you can also customise the layout of the drawers that you would like on your base, as well as the number of them. Again, this is great for those irregular room shapes, limited space, or if your bed is against the wall.

As opposed to the Ottoman Bed, the Divan Bed is often a more budget-friendly option. So if you want a cheaper, high-quality bed, the divan bed option might be just right for you.

Cons

Similarly to the Ottoman Bed, the Divan Bed has a few drawbacks that we recommend considering before making your final decision of buying one.

The main drawback is if you’re someone who requires a significant amount of storage space, you might find that the Divan bed is more limited as to what you can store in it. However, if you don’t want to store large suitcases, seasonal clothes and bedding, and you have an attic and wardrobe where you can keep these items, the Divan bed can easily suffice.

Another thing you may have to consider when it comes to buying a Divan Bed is implementing it cohesively with your surrounding furniture. Your surrounding bedside tables, for example, could block your drawers and prevent the full extent of the length they can be pulled out. One tip that we recommend to overcome this is to leave at least 50cm between your Divan bed and bedside table to allow for plenty of room.

Due to the solid bed base, there is less air circulation around Divan Beds. If you’re a hot sleeper, you could potentially resolve this issue by lifting the mattress regularly and stripping the bed to let it air out. You can also invest in some breathable mattress toppers to help with the air circulation of your mattress.

Who Benefits From Ottoman Beds?

Ottoman beds have so many benefits to cater for a wide variety of people’s needs. They mainly benefit those who require that little bit of extra storage space so they can get the most out of the space in their bedroom.

Those with small apartments, people who have small spare guest bedrooms and children may benefit from a small single Ottoman bed. Their small size makes them perfect storage solutions to fit miscellaneous household items, whilst being narrow enough to fit in these smaller rooms. We’ve previously touched on side opening ottoman beds, and these are great for irregular room layouts, for example if your bed is against a wall.

Ottoman beds also benefit couples who have lots of belongings and are in need of some extra storage space. If you love to stretch out in bed without disturbing your partner, a king or super king sized ottoman bed might be the perfect choice to give you both many nights of wonderful sleep, as well as transformed storage and organisation.

Who Benefits From Divan Beds?

Just like the Ottoman bed, many people can benefit from a Divan bed thanks to their sophisticated designs and drawers underneath to store many items that you don’t want on show. Available in a wide variety of fabric and finishes, you can pick the right style of divan bed, just like the ottoman one.

Divan beds are great for those with limited strength and mobility. If you’re someone that might struggle lifting an ottoman bed, the drawers of the divan bed provide easier access so you can grab anything you need conveniently. However, our modern ottoman beds are made with hydraulic features that make them easier to lift so they aren’t overly heavy. With that being said, if you want to be on the safe side, a divan bed might make a great option for you.

Despite not having as much storage space underneath as the ottoman bed, divan beds can still hold a lot of your everyday items such as clothes, shoes and jewellery etc. This bed frame tends to also be the cheaper option as opposed to the ottoman, making them a more budget friendly choice.

Divan beds are easy to maintain as they have fewer mechanisms such as hinges and bolts than an ottoman bed. However, this doesn’t make the ottoman bed inferior as they’re still high quality storage solutions with ample room inside. The divan bed is just a simpler option!

How Do They Compare With Comfort & Support?

Both divan and ottoman beds make very comfortable and supportive options in their own unique ways. With the right mattress, your sleep can be enhanced even more!

Divan beds offer plenty of comfort thanks to their soft cushioned base. They’re ideal for those who prefer a solid sleeping surface, since they are not designed with slats. They’re great for memory foam mattresses as there’s no chance of your mattress sagging and dipping between the slats. However, if you have a bed frame with slats and would like a memory foam mattress, it’s a great tip to ensure that each slat is no more than 3 inches apart to extend your mattress’ lifespan.

Our ottoman beds are designed with these slats underneath, allowing for more air ventilation. This is ideal for the warmer seasons, and if you’re generally a hot sleeper. The slats in the ottoman bed also provide more flexibility - the slats themselves don’t mold like a mattress, but their flexibility and gaps allow your mattress to respond better to your body.

Both bed designs can be paired with a variety of mattresses, such as hybrid, pocket spring, rolled mattresses and memory foam mattresses, but these are just a few handy tips to consider before you purchase one.

Style Preferences & Aesthetics: Ottoman Vs Divan Beds

In terms of style and aesthetics, both Divan & Ottoman Beds look sleek and modern in the home in their own ways. Let’s take a look at what makes each bed style stylish and visually appealing when implemented into your bedroom space.

Divan beds are often simple, compact and blend seamlessly into many bedroom spaces, thanks to their customisable drawer options. They’re great for smaller bedrooms and those with small amounts of storage; their simplicity makes them particularly favourable for those who are fond of minimalist bedroom styles. Available in a choice of fabrics, colours and finishes, Divan Beds give you the option to express your creativity when it comes to enhancing your bedroom decor.

Ottoman beds often provide a luxurious and contemporary appearance when added to the living space. Their fixed design makes them feel anchored into your bedroom space, making them a designated storage solution for your large items. They’re perfect for those who would like a bold bed that acts as a stylish centrepiece for the bedroom. Just like the Divan bed, you can select an option of fabrics and finishes so you  can truly match your new bed to your desired tastes.

If you’re unsure as to which fabric to go for, you can order up to 5 fabrics from our fabric sample service - you’ll be able to really get a feel for the sample at your fingertips and see the colours for yourself.
